Informatics Scholarships

The School of Informatics partners with local companies to offer scholarships to deserving students. Below is a list of scholarships available at either IU Bloomington or Indianapolis. Many others are available through Indiana University. For more information contact: Director of Undergraduate Recruitment or Director of Graduate Program.


Undergraduate Scholarships

Fall 2008 Undergraduate Scholarships


Arvin Meritor Informatics Scholarship
This scholarship is given to a sophomore pursuing a degree in Informatics on the Bloomington campus. The three year scholarship provides $3,000 per year for Informatics study. Preference is given to Indiana residents from under-represented groups who have a record of academic excellence. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. ArvinMeritor, Inc. is a premier tier one automotive supplier with a 100-year history of delivering technologically advanced systems, modules and components to the motor vehicle industry.

Cecil Richmond (Corky) Informatics Undergraduate Scholarship
The Corky Richmond Scholarship is awarded to a School of Informatics undergraduate; specifically an  incoming direct admit freshmen who exhibits high school academic excellence. The $5,000 scholarship is renewable for a total of 4 years if the student remains in good academic standing.. The donors are Gary and his wife Mia Wiggins. In 2006, the Cecil “Corky” Richmond Jr. (BA’65), Informatics Undergraduate Scholarship, was recently created (by Gary Wiggins, BA’66, MA’68, MLS’71, PhD’85, adjunct professor and director of chemical informatics) in memory of Corky Richmond, a longtime Indianapolis Star reporter with a passion for the merging of journalism and technology.

Deans Advisory Council Senior Scholarship
The DAC, Dean’s Advisory Council Scholarship is a $1000 annual commitment to a School of Informatics undergraduate. The outstanding junior will exhibit innovation, commitment to community service and achieved academic excellence. The donors are members of the Dean’s Advisory Council.

Lilly Undergraduate Scholarship
The Lilly Undergraduate Scholarship is a 3 year annual commitment to a School of Informatics undergraduate. The sophomore is chosen based on their academic excellence.  Preferences given to Indiana Informatics students on the Bloomington or Indianapolis campuses. It is renewable for a total of  3years if the student remains in good academic standing. The minimum GPA of 3.5 is required. The donor is the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation, Inc.
Philanthropy and community service are long-standing traditions at Eli Lilly and Company. For more than a century, the company has been building upon the founding Lilly family’s commitment to the philosophy of good corporate citizenship. In keeping with this philosophy, Lilly contributes at the level of the most generous companies worldwide - a goal it achieves annually through scholarship and cash contributions.

Telamon Informatics Scholarship
This is an annual scholarship  given in the amount of $1,000 to an undergraduate student. The student must currently be enrolled in the School of Informatics and maintain a record of academic excellence which is demonstrated by a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. The Telamon Corporation, lead by Albert Chen is the donor. The name Telamon Corporation comes from the Greek word for “support.”  That points aptly enough to the strategy underlying Albert Chen's Carmel, Indiana-based broadband communications company.  The company provides telecommunications support services to phone companies, local exchange carriers, Internet service providers and government agencies. Prior to founding Telamon, Mr. Chen was in various management positions with GTE for more than 13 years.  He received his bachelor’s degree from National Chengchi University, Taipei, Taiwan and his master’s degree in mathematical statistics from Portland State University

American Association of University Women Fellowships - International Doctoral
"To qualify, applicants must have completed all course work, passed all required preliminary examinations, and received approval for their research proposal or plan by Nov. 15, 2006. Students holding any fellowship for writing a dissertation in the year prior to the AAUW Educational Foundation fellowship year are not eligible. Open to applicants in all fields of study, except engineering. (For engineering, see Selected Professions Fellowships.) Scholars engaged in researching gender issues are encouraged to apply."

American Association of University Women Dissertation Fellowships

Support for full-time study or research to women who are not United States citizens or permanent residents.
Both graduate and postgraduate study at accredited institutions are supported.

Andrew W. Mellon Foundation/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowships
"Appropriate fields of specialization include but are not limited to: anthropology, archaeology, art and architectural history, economic history, film, geography, history, languages and literatures, legal studies, linguistics, musicology, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, rhetoric and communication, sociology, and theater studies. Proposals in the social science fields listed above are eligible only if they employ predominantly humanistic approaches (e.g., economic history, law and literature, political philosophy). Proposals in interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary studies are welcome, as are proposals focused on any geographic region or on any cultural or linguistic group. "

Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship
Designed to encourage original and significant study of ethical or religious values in all fields of the humanities and social sciences.

Dan David Prize
"The Dan David Prize is unique in its flexible definition of dynamically changing fields of human knowledge and in its process of fostering the next generation of scholars. The laureates annually donate 20 scholarships of $15,000 each to outstanding doctoral students throughout the world, in the chosen fields."

DOE Computational Science Graduate Fellowship
Funded by the Department of Energy’s Office of Science and National Nuclear Security Administration.
Now entering its 15th year, the DOE CSGF trains scientists to meet the nation’s workforce needs and helps to create a nationwide interdisciplinary community.

Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fund
Tuition and living expenses; research and publishing costs. JP Morgan sole trustee. Must apply through University and be nominated by Dean. See IU Graduate School for more Details.

Ford Foundation Diversity Fellowships - Dissertation
Seeks candidates who have demonstrated superior academic achievement, are committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, show promise of future achievement as scholars and teachers, and are well prepared to use diversity as a resource

Google Anita Borg Scholarship
Part of Google's ongoing commitment to furthering Anita Borg's vision to encourage women to excel in computing and technology and become active role models and leaders

Jacob K. Javits Fellowships Program
Provides fellowships to students of superior academic ability—selected on the basis of demonstrated achievement, financial need, and exceptional promise—to undertake study at the doctoral and Master of Fine Arts level in selected fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Microsoft Research Fellowship
Preference will be given to students completing their second or third year in a Ph.D. program. Must be nominated by university department chairs, their designees, or by a Microsoft researcher or Live Labs scientist. Note: Live labs may be of particular interest to HCI students.

National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships
U.S. citizens and nationals trained in science and engineering disciplines of military importance, the Department of Defense (DoD) plans to award approximately 200 new three-year graduate fellowships in April 2007

National Physical Science Consortium Graduate Fellowships
Includes stipend, tuition, fees, and salary for two summers of internship that exceeds $200,000.

NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program
Offers approximately 1,000 graduate fellowships providing three years of support for graduate study leading to research-based master’s or doctoral degrees and is intended for students who are at the early stages of their graduate study

Khwarizmi International Award
Seeks to recognize the efforts made by researchers, innovators and inventors both in Iran and all over the world and to appreciate their invaluable achievements and contributions to various fields of science and technology.
