This course serves as an introduction to multimedia arts and technology as an interdisciplinary field and provides a wide-ranging introduction to its various forms within contemporary culture. We will consider the many ways we experience multimedia arts and technology in everyday life, and its consequences and influences on our current world. By considering its origins, evolution, underlying principles of communication, historical contexts, contemporary new technologies, and innovative creative approaches, we will explore how the field is constantly evolving. The field of multimedia arts and technology combines various forms of media, technology, and art to create engaging and interactive experiences. It encompasses a wide range of creative and technical skills, incorporating elements from animation, audio production, video production, web design, game development, virtual reality, graphic design, digital art, augmented reality, and more. What will I learn in this course?: - Consider new ways that multimedia arts, and technology are present in our world today. - Understand how multimedia arts, and technology have been used in the past, and impacts. - How to create a multimedia arts, and technology-based group project from initial concept/ideation through completion. - Acquire new technical skills - Create a media artifact that appeals to a specific audience and serves a specific purpose. - Demonstrate your own initiative, drive, resourcefulness, and ability to work alone and in groups. - Learn how to effectively analyze, and reflect upon past, contemporary, and future forms of media arts and technology.

Lab is a weekly component of I310 (course description below). In the labs, students work on a Media Artifact Project. This semester-long project allows students to critically engage with new media principles, dynamics, and technologies by working in small groups to create a new media artifact. Each group will identify a topic of interest¿something they will enjoy researching¿and choose a media format(s) that will be used to create their media artifact. The new media artifact could be a combination of video, audio, text, images, interactivity, and/or other multimedia components.
