BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Indiana University Bloomington’s Interim Provost and Executive Vice President, John Applegate, has appointed a committee to identify candidates for the position of dean at IU’s Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering.
Dennis Groth has served as interim dean at the Luddy School since March 2020.
Established in 2000, the Luddy School is one of the broadest of its kind in the world. Blending the fields of computer science, informatics, intelligent systems engineering, information and library science, and data science, the Luddy School is home to more than 3,000 students from the United States and around the world. Luddy faculty are world-renowned experts and leaders in their respective fields.
The Luddy is a multicampus school, with locations at IU Bloomington and, as theSchool of Informatics and Computing, at IUPUI.
The Luddy School at IUB had $14.9 million in funded research expenditures during 2020-21, while SOIC added $6.1 million.
“Luddy faculty are some of the most interdisciplinary researchers on campus,” Applegate said. “Researchers at the school lead and contribute to groundbreaking work in a broad range of areas that impact all of our lives, from human computer interaction, to intelligent systems engineering, to artificial intelligence. The Luddy School was also recently named as a principal organization in two new AI research institutes with the U.S. National Science Foundation.”
The Luddy School is recognized as a top institution for its programs in library and information science, and human-computer interaction. The Luddy School on the Bloomington campus includes five fabrication and prototype labs, 11 rooms dedicated to student meetings with potential employers, nine instructional labs, and 21 research labs. SOIC at IUPUI features a motion capture lab, in-classroom virtual reality, and 3D printing and projection mapping.
The $35 million Luddy Center for Artificial Intelligence, a 58,000-square-foot, state-of-the art facility that will open at IUB next month, will serve as the hub for multidisciplinary research in advanced AI and machine learning applications.
